WHERE I'M FROM

I am from “the bumpy road”

From flip-flops and bucket hats

I am from sour grass in the backyard

And the blackberry bushes by the woods (My brother and I swore they were so much better than what you get at the grocery store- juicy, tangy, sweet- yet bitter)

I am from the Wisteria tree

            And the yellow dandelions

Picked for my mother to place

In her glass mason jar by the kitchen window

I am from Sherbet ice-cream for a cold

      From Mickey Ears and alligators

I am from Paul McCartney playing on the stereo

And a Disney VHS placed in a box TV

I am from apple juice

       And Publix buttercream frosting cakes

From my mother, with her sun-kissed skin and overalls, mowing acres of green grass on the John Deere

From the starry-lit home for family to be on the holidays

Always under my arm was “Teddy”

 Tattered and torn

I held the soft, plush brown bear as closely

  As I hold these memories
